Annabelle Hydrangea | Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle'
Picasso had his blue period. I have my Annabelle Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle') period and it has yet to end. It's a delightful hydrangea, covered in big white puffball blooms for much of the season. Like any hydrangea it's happiest with morning sun and afternoon shade, but I've seen them tolerate nearly full sun. If you drive out to Barren Ridge Vineyards in Fishersville, VA you can see just how well they'll tolerate sun and wind once established. They'll spend much of the first year in the ground looking sad and droopy, but get them over the hump and they'll be your best friend.
Hydrangea arborescens is listed on a lot of deer safe lists but 'Annabelle' isn't on my personal deer safe list. To quote MosDef in The Italian Job, "I had. A bad. Experience."
