Say what you want about the pilgrims who settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts, there's no denying that they survived some terrible conditions. When typhoid fever broke out, a Native American named Joe Pye is said to have halted the epidemic in its tracks using Eupatorium purpureum - which is why to this day, we call it "Joe Pye weed."

Eupatorium is just a wonderful native perennial. You can see it in wet areas near ponds and swamps, growing as tall as 6 or 7 feet. The long stems are topped with big clumps of flowers that pollinators absolutely love. The cultivars we offer have been bred to fit the home landscape a little better.

Eupatorium purpureum 'Gateway'

'Gateway' is still a butterfly favorite, with its big pink flower clusters at the ends of deep red stems. It's a little shorter and also bushier, making a dramatic statement in the garden.

Perennial
Blooms: July to September
Height: 5-6 ft
Spread: 3-5 ft
Plant in full sun to part shade. Deer tend not to bother Eupatorium.

Eupatorium dubium 'Little Joe'

What if you love everything Eupatorium brings to the table but a 6 foot tall perennial would be way out of scale for your landscape? 'Little Joe' has the gorgeous flowers of 'Gateway' but stays much more compact.

Perennial
Blooms: July to September
Height: 3-4 ft
Spread: 1 ft

Plant in full sun to part shade. Deer tend not to bother Eupatorium.

We offer Eupatorium  in #1 containers
