Forsythia | Forsythia x intermedia 'Lynwood'
Several years ago we stayed at an old farmhouse outside of Charlottesville. Spring was right around the corner, but the woods were still bare. Standing on the porch with my morning coffee I saw a blaze of bright yellow from over a half mile away. That's how much color forsythia brings to the party!
Those of you who know me, or follow my blog, know that I'm a very low effort gardener. I like a plant that looks worse the more you fuss with it, and that's the very definition of forsythia. If you can let it grow a little wild, it's a terrific massing plant when not in bloom - everyone needs a backdrop - and it's a riot of bright yellow blooms when it is in bloom. The more you have to hack at it, shear it, or shape it, the less you're going to like it. Forsythia gets big, and will reward you if you let it do what comes naturally to it. If you have a 12 ft x 12 ft townhouse backyard, this is not the plant you're looking for.
